Location: 13420 Jarvi (in Oceanview)
Parking: Street (2 spaces in front of the tennis court)
Ground Cover: Wood chips for most, but some hard plastic
Swings: One lay down swing
Equipment: The two old climbing structures remain with slides (one for smaller children). The new additions are a huge climbing wave wall and two zip lines (one disc that you sit on and one chair).
Nature: Trees and trails all around
Covered Area: Yes
Sledding: Wonderful sledding
Other: Tennis courts and work out circuit stations nearby

The updates to this playground are amazing. The climbing wave wall is fantastic and provides enough low holds for even the smallest climbers, but some good high holds for those a bit braver. There also is a ladder to one high section that let small children look at the trees and see the ocean! The focal point of the renovation is the zip lines. They are amazing. Yes, they had to cut down some trees, but the fun provided by this piece of equipment is astronomical. You can sit on it at one end and with a push get yourself way down to the other end. (Yes, I tried it out to make sure it was safe.) My son rode it about three hundred and ten times. I also made my fitness goal by running back and forth to each end. My only concern about the new construction of this park was that I thought they might take out the two old play structures. Thankfully, they are still there so my son can drive a ship and play store (below the larger structure). Other: There are some picnic tables close to the climbing area and some benches.
This playground is impressive when you first see the huge tree house structure. There are many ways to climb up to the first level - stumps, stairs, a climbing wall or a chain and plank ladder. There is one slide off of this level, perfect for younger children. Two ladders take you up to the second ladder. This level had wonderful head room for an adult and feels open, but is safe for small kiddos. There is a very long slide that takes you down to the ground. I had a great time on the slide, but am a bit worried how fast children will go with a layer of ice on the slide and snowpants. We didn't have any trouble with a line for the ladder, but I can see that if many children are at the playground it could happen as that is the only structure. Nonetheless, it is a fun playground that provides something different from the usual!Princessliakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17191744416999113629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6168398018615402814.post-51188758368581146162014-08-26T13:50:00.001-07:002014-08-26T13:50:26.854-07:00Balto Seppla
Location: 3360 Wisconsin Street
Parking: Large parking lot
Ground Cover: Turf
Swings: 2 child, 1 baby and 1 chair
Equipment: Large climbing structure with many rope elements, two spinning items, two slides, a swinging hammock low to the ground and two diggers in the sand area.
Nature: Surrounded by trees and on the edge of a large, grassy field.
Covered Area: Yes, with picnic tables.
Sledding: Across the field is a great sledding hill.
Other: There are many benches around the park and there is a sand pit. There currently are two port-a-potties, but I don't know if these will stay throughout the year.

This is my 4 and 6 year old's favorite park currently. I love the aesthetic of the design with natural colors and a creative design. There is one main climbing structure, but it has many different rope areas branching out from the center. It is a wonderful challenge for gross motor coordination. The slides are small so a young sibling could have fun here as well. There is a sandpit close to the climbing structure with two 'diggers'. I suggest bringing sand toys if you visit the park. The swings are set apart from the main play area, but close enough to watch children at both areas. I think this would be a great location for a birthday party. Thanks again to the Park Foundation for another fabulous park. This is aimed at older children who enjoy climbing. There is a ramp to climb, rope structures and interesting bar structures. I also love the new addition of spinning items to playground and this has three! Small children can toddle around the bottom of the climbing areas, but this shouldn't be a destination for toddlers. All of the equipment is different and even looks unique with the colors and shapes. If your family enjoys tennis, this would be a great location as the parents can easily monitor children playing on the playground from the courts. Other: Sand volleyball area. The park is at the end of Merrill Field so you can see many airplanes taking off during the day.

This park was 'fixed' by the Anchorage Park Foundation this summer (2013). It is truly an amazing playground that rivals even the Polar Bear Playground in creativity. There are large bugs and mushrooms for the children to climb and sit upon. Older children can test their skills at climbing a number of different structures. There are many different items that spin for every age level. There is a high twisty slide only accessible by climbing which nicely keeps the younger set away. The toddler area has climbing items at an appropriate height and a perfect slide. The 2 swings seemingly are balanced on a 'tree' complete with owls. There are fireweed (or beanstalks as my child said) to climb and a rock arch perfect for pretending to be lions or lynx.

I am very impressed with this playground and think that you should gather some friends and give it a test run!Princessliakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17191744416999113629noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6168398018615402814.post-82450149915078324142013-09-03T16:02:00.000-07:002013-09-03T16:02:03.627-07:00Campbell Creek Playground

The new playground at Campbell Creek is another great addition to the
Anchorage park system. My favorite part is that it is equally appealing
to younger children as it is to the older kids. The area isn't huge,
but children can spread out and up!

There are drums, a type of xylophone and these great speakers to send
messages across the play area. The ground cover is slightly squishy and
rubbery - perfect for crawlers, those new to walking and babies who
enjoying eating the chips at other playgrounds (there are wood chips
under the swing though).

The older children area is perfect for children with lots of energy.
They can make their way over the swinging bridge, climb up the web or
hop between posts. There are bars for hanging and also two items that
spin in circles. There are benches perfect for sitting and monitoring
the children. There currently is blue fencing around the play area
keeping the kiddos contained. Skedaddlers all loved this play area!
This playground is amazing. The design is fantastic and you have to visit it! I suggest visit it after Costco or on your way out of town on the Glenn Highway.

There is a great ship you can steer and climb through, a raven area with
amazing spinning pieces, a great web and climbing wall. There is a log
to cross, airplane and control tower, swings and bouncy steps. While
the play area isn't large, there are enough areas for children to spread
out. Parents can easily keep eyes on their children from the cement
steps.

The creativity behind this playground is amazing. It is decidedly
designed for children to play and interact - there are fossils in the
climbing steps, things for spinning and windows for peering at friends.
The colors are bold and draw kids into the play area. I also love how
many climbing areas there are for the older children. Just an amazing park!
This is a fabulous place to take children who love planes. Float planes take off and land almost continuously during the summer. From the playground, you have a front row seat to the action. While the playground is lacking, most children have fun digging in the sand or tossing rocks into the lake. You are not allowed into the water, but many children filled their buckets for their castles. I suggest bringing a picnic, sand toys and toy airplanes for the afternoon. I also could see this as a great birthday party location for the airplane lover. The grass area is large enough for you to spread out the festivities!Princessliakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17191744416999113629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6168398018615402814.post-46971680272881388892013-04-23T18:58:00.002-07:002013-04-23T18:58:48.049-07:00Forsythe Park

Location: 11301 Birch Road. From the Seward Highway, head towards the mountains on O'Malley and turn right on Birch. The park is a couple blocks down Birch on your left.

Parking: Paved lot with 12 spaces

Ground Cover: Wood chips

Swings: None

Equipment: One structure with a metal climbing ladder leading to a big kid slide. There is a toddler slide and sort of a "shop" structure for playing store.

Nature: Beautiful with tall trees, grass and a paved path.

Covered Area: No

Sledding: Perhaps for small children

Other: There is a tennis court and many picnic tables.

I have driven by this park on my way to Cross Park down the street on the right. It seems to be perpetually in the shade during the summer. There are about a half dozen picnic tables scattered along the path through the park making it a great spot for a picnic. It is also on the paved trail so a nice stop during a bike ride perhaps. This is better for older children as there is only a little slide and a pretend play counter for toddlers. Older children enjoy the climbing and running on the equipment. It also lends itself to pretend play as a ship or castle. The surrounding trees and rolling hills are also nice to explore. I would keep your eyes open for moose and bears at this location on the hillside.
Location: Off of Tudor, turn South (away from downtown) on Arctic. Take your first right onto Lancaster, Right on Kent and Left on Westbury. This road is your first right and is a bit hidden, but if you look there is a narrow parking area and the park sign is at the end.
Parking: Narrow parking lot
Ground Cover: Small rocks under the play structure
Swings: One tire swing
Equipment: Climbing structure with three different slides, a fireman pole, ladder and twisty climbing pole. There also is one rocking horse.
Nature: Trees, grassy areas and small hills.
Covered Area: A bit away from the playground
Sledding: Possibly for toddlers, but the hills are quite small.
Other: Tennis courts, benches and paved bike trail perfect for young bikers.

This park sits next to Willowaw Elementary School and near the intersection of Tudor and Arctic. The parking and entrance are a bit hard to find as they sit in a neighborhood. There is a short walk to actual playground, so bring a wagon if you are bringing small children or a picnic. There is a great grassy area all around the park and there are huge trees as well. Children can find paths through the bushes and the road is a bit away (but there is no fence). The play structure does have quite a bit of graffiti, but is in good physical shape. There are slides for big kids and a small toddler slide as well. I enjoyed our time at this park and most enjoyed the natural setting!Princessliakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17191744416999113629noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6168398018615402814.post-47562220828043412922012-09-08T21:03:00.000-07:002012-09-08T21:03:44.992-07:00Park For All, Cuddy Park

I was so excited to help out with the Parks For All project in Cuddy
Center. The group was getting the ground ready for the winter by moving
plants, replanting trees and burying hose. The playground is slated to
be open next summer!
If you haven't participated in a
Park Fix-Up Project, it is really fun. There is an immediate to
connection to other workers and it is impossible to not have a
conversation across a prickly rose bush. You laugh and work, knowing
the fun that kids are going to have next summer. The picture of the
playground showed ramps connecting equipment that can is great for
walkers, wheelchairs and legs of all abilities. There couldn't be a
better setting next to the library and with a perfect view of the duck
pond.
Location: Close to the corner of Beaver and Debarr. From Debarr, turn right onto Beaver and the parking lot is after the white church on your right.
Parking: Lot
Ground Cover: Wood chips
Swings: 2 big kid and 2 little
Equipment: Climbing structure with slides, climbing wave wall, 3 bouncing posts, and hand cart.
Nature: Green grass, trees and a wonderful tree for hiding and climbing.
Covered Area: No
Sledding: No
Other: Basketball courts, sand volleyball court and tennis courts.

This is a great playground that is close to town, but just off of the busy street. There is is usual climbing and sliding structure, but the hand cart was the biggest hit with our group. Children rode across for a long time. The climbing wall would be more fun for those a bit older, but our 4 and under crowd could climb up a bit. Their is a tree on the grass that makes a perfect fort. There are houses behind the tree making it a safe place for children to play. I recommend this playground as it was pretty clean, had interesting equipment and a safe location. This is a hidden little gem! I would classify this as a park rather than a playground, but is a fun stop nonetheless. If you have some time to kill downtown, this is a great stop. Remember to bring shovels and buckets! The whales are great for climbing, the grass is perfect for running and the sand is deep and fantastic for digging. This park is in a quiet neighborhood away from busy streets and has amazing inlet views. It is next to the railroad tracks so you might get treated to a sighting and horn pull!Princessliakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17191744416999113629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6168398018615402814.post-54132352535413138972012-08-07T14:45:00.001-07:002012-08-07T14:45:08.102-07:00Eagle River Accessible Playground

Another great park! This is on a dead end road in a quiet neighborhood. It has trees all around, a small creek in the trees and is on the bike trail system. The equipment is perfect for all ages with interesting climbing equipment and small stairs on another area for little kids. There are twisty slides and a covered slide as well. The bouncer can hold children on either side and in the middle providing fun for a large number of children. I recommend this park as it is clean, quiet and has nature all around. Just be careful for children and the creek in the trees!Princessliakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17191744416999113629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6168398018615402814.post-78000000094940078942011-10-25T12:58:00.000-07:002011-10-25T12:58:12.989-07:00Wolverine Park

Driving to the park, I was a bit unsure about its location. I was surprised by this great park surrounded by trees and large grassy areas. There is a little play structure for small children with short steps, two little slides, a steering wheel and a twisty thing. The larger structure for older children is much taller and has a big, twisty slide, high curly thing and climbing net. There are also swings. There was some graffiti, but it was clean and in a quiet neighborhood. Just watch children running towards the road. I recommend visiting this park!Princessliakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17191744416999113629noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6168398018615402814.post-64495690020450589042011-10-18T13:27:00.000-07:002011-10-18T13:27:41.414-07:00Lloyd Steele park

Parking: Street
Ground Cover: Small rocks and some rubberized matting
Swings: No
Equipment: Climbing, monkey bars, four slides; one smaller structure and one for older children
Nature: Wonderful treed area surrounding the playground and a large soccer field close
Covered Area: Yes, a bit away from the playground
Sledding: No
Other: Fenced in most of the way with only a few escape zones

This is a great little park in a quiet area. It set back from a slow street with a lot of fencing to keep the kiddos corralled. The equipment has two sections with a monkey bar connecting them. One has shorter steps and smaller slides for younger children and other has rather large steps, a bridge and twisty slide for the older set. The gravel is great for shovels and the trees perfect for playing hide and seek, building a teepee or even just walking on the crunching leaves. The only drawback I found is the lack of swings, but it still warrants a visit if you live in Turnagain.Princessliakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17191744416999113629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6168398018615402814.post-917915189238535332011-10-13T17:47:00.000-07:002011-10-13T17:47:50.327-07:00Westchester Lagoon

This is one of the most amazing playgrounds I have found. It is new (October 2011) and creatively designed. There is a hanging teeter-totter, tires to climb through and a slide with no sides (you put your legs around it and slide down). A great hammock swing is perfect for a set of little kids (or adult) and a great spider web climbing structure. Another area is for little children with small stools for stepping on or sitting, blocks for climbing and a sand table. It is large enough for a lot of children to spread out and not feed crowded. I highly recommend checking out this playground. Bring a lunch - spend the day, take a walk and watch for trains!Princessliakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17191744416999113629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6168398018615402814.post-64785366287840692662011-10-04T13:58:00.000-07:002011-10-04T13:58:22.189-07:00Shady Birch

This is a nice neighborhood park on the South side of town. It is on a quiet street and the park is edged by trees. The equipment is generic, but good for young children. One swing is a bit higher than other allowing older children some leg room. The park was clean and there was a trash can close to the equipment area. If you live nearby, this would be a nice family park for a visit or picnic.Princessliakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17191744416999113629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6168398018615402814.post-74881332266396069882011-09-27T14:04:00.000-07:002011-09-27T14:04:54.810-07:00Alderwood Park

Parents in Government Hill are so lucky to have Sunset Park and this fabulous little playground. I thought the kids might be disappointed with the lack of slides and typical climbing structure, but I think they enjoyed this more. The park is in a quiet area, off a low traffic street and set off a bit from the road. The trees are beautiful along the edges. The train is wonderful for all ages and lets children climb in and out of cars, turn the steering wheel and pretend to pull into the station. The swings are away a bit allowing a separation of groups. You can also hear the real trains down the hill! I highly recommend this park!Princessliakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17191744416999113629noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6168398018615402814.post-55219042162897450512011-09-20T13:42:00.000-07:002011-09-20T13:42:13.444-07:00Whisper Faith

There is one play structure here and a large soccer field. It is listed for ages 5-12, but the small slide is perfect for younger children. There are some open spaces at the top of the structure and the two slides are tall. The equipment is standard. There are two benches for sitting and there is a nice hill for little legs to wobble up and down. The street is close by so keep them in eye sight! The parking lot of quite large and the kids seemed to want to run to it quite often. I was so excited to find this wonderful park. This is yet another great neighborhood park that is set off from the street and surrounded by trees. It is great to have the two structures if you have kids of different ages. There is plenty of room for large groups. The treed areas are great for young explorers as well. There was mention of bugs in the summer, but this fall day was perfectly pest free! It would be perfect for a family picnic as the adults could play tennis nearby the children playing on the equipment. I highly recommend this park and can't wait until winter for a fun sledding expedition!Princessliakhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17191744416999113629noreply@blogger.com1
